Residential security cameras are becoming increasingly popular due to the rising crime rates. To install a security camera system, you could hire a professional, or even do it yourself depending on the type of security system you have. There are basically two types of camera systems available, wired and wireless home security systems. Here are some basic steps you can follow to install a camera system:
Choose a location
The first and most important step is choosing a location. If you have a big area to cover, you can go for more than one camera. You can cover all points of entry for surveillance. When choosing a location, make sure there is nothing blocking the view such as a wall, tree, plant etc. Most people place cameras where the roof meets the wall, this provides a better field of view and shelters the camera from rain, snow or wind.
Drill and Attach the Mounting Bracket
Once you have selected a location, the next step is to drill a hole in the wall for the bracket. This bracket will hold the camera in place. Such components will usually come with a security system.
Plug in the Cameras
If you have a wireless security camera system, you don’t have to worry about laying out wires throughout the house and connecting all the devices. All you have to do is plug in the camera to a nearby power socket. However, for a wired system, make sure you choose the correct cables and wires.
Connect the DVR or Monitor
A DVR is necessary to store the video footage. This device is optional and depends on your security needs. You will need a monitor to view the footage. If you wish to view live feed only, you will not need a DVR.
Test Run
Make sure all devices are in place and connected before you turn on the system. Testing is important to make sure the camera is facing the right direction. You can adjust the view, tilt, or zoom according to your preference.
Having a home security system will not only deter crime, but will let you keep an eye on your kids, babysitter etc. However, before you go out to get home security cameras, make sure your research well and are well-informed.
